Under a law passed by the Legislature in 2025 and effective as of March 1, training must include techniques for cutting, styling, and treating textured hair; the right products and tools; hair and scalp health; and education about the cultural and historical significance of textured hair.

For too long, people with curls, coils, kinks, waves, and other textured hair have not always had equitable access to professionals trained to properly care for their hair.

This is about making sure our workforce is prepared to serve all Washingtonians, and that everyone can walk into a salon or barbershop knowing their hair will be understood and cared for. Representation and inclusion matter, right down to the salon chair. ❤️
