One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that heat instantly “burns” your hair.

The truth? Heat damage usually starts by drying your hair out first.

Over time, repeated heat styling causes moisture to escape from the hair shaft. As that happens, the cuticle becomes rougher, which can leave your hair looking dull, feeling dry, tangling more easily, and struggling to hold a curl.

A heat protectant doesn’t make your hair heat-proof—but it does create a lightweight barrier that helps reduce moisture loss and allows your hot tools to glide more smoothly across the hair.

Think of it like sunscreen.
