πΏβοΈ Sometimes, the best thing we can do is simply recharge.
This week has been about stepping away from the usual routine and reconnecting with nature β mountains, lakes, caves, fresh air, sunshine and naturally running water. ποΈπ§
As therapists, we spend so much time focused on others. To give our best to our patients, we also need time to rest, reset and look after ourselves.
For me, getting outdoors, moving and enjoying nature is a great way to recharge and return with renewed energy. πΏπ

πͺ Working on movement, one step at a time
This reel shows a young patient working to improve forearm movement, with the left side more restricted than the right.
Pronation and supination describe turning the forearm so the palm faces down or up. βπ
Our conservative approach combines osteopathic treatment and specific exercises to support mobility, function and control. Small improvements can make a meaningful difference. π
π Can you spot the difference between both sides?

A collection of memories from the National Lipoedema Conference 2026, held at the Cork International Hotel on 29 August 2026.
An excellent day bringing together patients, clinicians, researchers, surgeons, therapists, patient organisations and industry professionals from Ireland and internationally, all contributing different perspectives to the understanding and management of lipoedema.
The programme covered everything from diagnosis, genetics and emerging research to nutrition, psychological wellbeing, conservative management, surgery, rehabilitation and long-term patient care.
It was also a privilege to represent MLD Ireland, alongside Antoinette OβConnor, Chairperson, and Siobhan Casey, Director of Communication, and to contribute to the programme with our presentation on professional standards, symptom management and post-surgical care, including my own discussion on the role of Manual Lymphatic Drainage in lipoedema care.
More than anything, these photographs are a reminder of the value of bringing patients and professionals together. Different disciplines, experiences and countries, but a common objective: improving knowledge, raising professional standards and ultimately providing better care and support for people living with lipoedema.
A fantastic conference, many interesting conversations, new connections and plenty of learning.
One for the memories. ππΈ
π National Lipoedema Conference 2026 | What an Experience!
One final look back at an incredible National Lipoedema Conference 2026 in Cork.
A huge thank you to Lipoedema Support Network Ireland, the organisers, speakers, exhibitors and everyone involved in making the conference such a valuable experience.
Over the course of the day, we heard perspectives from patients, researchers, surgeons, therapists and healthcare professionals β sharing knowledge, asking important questions and helping to move the conversation around lipoedema care forward.
It was a privilege to attend and to represent MLD Ireland, both as a participant and speaker, and especially to meet so many people who share the same commitment to improving education, professional standards and patient care.
Thank you also to everyone who followed my videos and conference updates. I hope these short clips helped share even a small part of what was a fantastic day. π
Now, after a very busy few days, itβs back to the clinic and our usual appointment schedule!

π National Lipoedema Conference 2026 | The Role of Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Lipoedema Care
I was truly honoured to have the opportunity to speak at this yearβs National Lipoedema Conference and to share the stage with so many professionals committed to improving our understanding and management of lipoedema.
Representing MLD Ireland, my part of our presentation focused on βThe Role of Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Lipoedema Care.β
For me, the important message is not simply about a particular technique. It is about understanding where MLD can have a role within appropriate, individualised lipoedema care, recognising its limitations, maintaining professional standards, and ensuring that therapists have the education and clinical reasoning needed to support their patients safely.
What made this such a valuable conference was the opportunity to bring together patients, therapists, clinicians, researchers and surgeons β different perspectives, but ultimately a shared goal: better understanding, better standards and better care for people living with lipoedema.
A great conference, and a privilege for MLD Ireland to be part of the conversation. π
And to all the therapists working in lymphatic care: keep learning, keep questioning and keep raising the standard of our profession.

Now itβs our turn to take the stage!
Our presentation, βSymptom Management, Professional Standards & Post-Surgical Care,β was divided into two parts.
In this first short video, Antoinette OβConnor, Chairperson of MLD Ireland, explains the role of the society and, most importantly, why having a professional body matters.
For patients living with conditions such as lipoedema and lymphoedema, professional standards, appropriate education and properly trained therapists are essential parts of delivering safe, effective and evidence-informed care.
A very important message β and one at the heart of what MLD Ireland represents. π
Next up, Iβll share the second half of our presentation, where I focus on symptom management and post-surgical care.

Back to the clinical talks with Virginia Ziulu, Nutritional Therapist, opening her session:
βLipoedema, Genetics & Nutrition: Understanding What You Can Influence.β
This first minute sets the scene for an important discussion around nutrition, genetics and lipoedema β and, importantly, where we may be able to make a difference.
Another valuable perspective on why lipoedema care needs to look at the whole patient, not simply one symptom or one treatment.
More from this talk to come. ππ

β A quick break from the presentations β but the learning continues!
A practical demonstration from medi looking at their β2 in 1β system, designed to make compression garments easier to put on and support patients with their day-to-day compression management.
Itβs always valuable at conferences like this to see the industry and clinical sides come together β translating compression technology into practical solutions that patients can actually use in everyday life.
Because the best compression garment can only work when the patient can wear it, tolerate it and use it consistently. π§¦π

The third presentation of the morning is from Dr. Giw Mostofizadeh-Haghighi on The LipLeg Study β the first randomised controlled trial in lipoedema surgery. Programme Printing Draft.pdf
In this short clip, the focus is on the study criteria and how the researchers compared people living with lipoedema with the general population and an obese population.
An important reminder of why good research matters: if we want to understand lipoedema properly, we need to understand what makes this patient population different β and what does not.
More snippets and clinical take-home messages coming throughout the day. ππ
