It is critically important to do a patch test before any hair colour or grey-blending service primarily to prevent severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis, as well as painful chemical burns and contact dermatitis.Even if you have been colouring your hair for years without an issue, a patch test is a mandatory safety step because your body's immune system can randomly develop a sensitivity to hair dye ingredients at any point in your life.1. The Major Culprit: PPDMost permanent and demi-permanent hair dyes contain a chemical compound called Paraphenylenediamine (PPD). It is highly effective at binding colour to the hair shaft—making it essential for covering or blending grey hair—but it is also a well-known allergen. A patch test ensures your skin can tolerate PPD and other active chemical agents before they are applied directly to your sensitive scalp.2. Severe Allergic Reactions vs. IrritationA patch test allows a stylist to see how your skin reacts on a tiny, controlled area (usually behind your ear or in the crook of your elbow) rather than across your whole head. Skipping it can result in:Contact Dermatitis: Severe redness, burning, itching, and blistering on the scalp, face, and neck.Extreme Swelling: Allergic reactions to hair dye often cause dramatic facial swelling, sometimes temporarily closing the eyes.Anaphylaxis: In rare, severe cases, the reaction can cause breathing difficulties and require emergency medical intervention.3. Salon Legalities & InsuranceIn Ireland and the UK, salon insurance policies strictly mandate patch testing. Salons are legally obligated to refuse technical colour treatments if a client has not completed a patch test within a specific timeframe (usually 48 hours prior to the appointment). If a salon applies colour without testing you first, they invalidate their insurance and put your safety at risk.4. When Do You Need a New Test? You cannot rely on a patch test you did years ago. Salons will require a fresh patch test if:You are a new client at that particular salon. You are changing to a completely different brand or type of colour. It has been more than 6 months since your last colour appointment. You have had any new black henna tattoos or permanent makeup since your last colour, as these can suddenly trigger a severe PPD allergy.A patch test takes less than five minutes to apply at a salon and must be left on your skin undisturbed for 48 hours to fully rule out a delayed immune response.

Hairdressers will understand! 🖤

Some of you have been sitting in my chair for years!
Some of you started as clients and became friends
Some of you I see maybe once a year, but we pick up exactly where we left off!

You mean a lot more to me then you might realise; and you probably don’t realise how many times you’ve walked through that door and made my day better too! 🖤
