A shampoo bar can look natural and still behave very differently on your scalp. 🌿

When you’ve got a sensitive, dry or easily irritated scalp, choosing hair care can get frustrating.

You swap the plastic bottle for a shampoo bar thinking you’re making a gentler choice… only to end up with hair that feels rough, a scalp that feels tight, or irritation you weren’t expecting.

Not all shampoo bars are formulated the same way.

Some traditional shampoo bars are actually lye-based soap formulated for use on hair. Soap naturally has a higher, more alkaline pH than our scalp and hair prefer, which can leave some hair types feeling dry, rough or tangled.

Then there are syndet shampoo bars made with cleansing surfactants — and even within this category, the ingredients can be very different.

You’ll often see SCS (Sodium Coco Sulfate) or SCI (Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate).

At Navve Bar, we formulate around SCI, a gentle, palm-free cleanser chosen because we wanted our bars to work for people who don’t always tolerate conventional hair products well.

But choosing SCI is only part of it.

We formulate our shampoo bars to a scalp-friendly pH and build each formula around what that particular hair and scalp type actually needs.

And those botanical ingredients on the label?

They’re not there because they sound pretty.

Rice protein is included to help strengthen and support fragile hair.
Rhassoul clay helps absorb excess oil and build-up.
Black seed oil helps nourish the scalp.
Argan and broccoli seed oils help condition and soften the hair.
