This patient underwent a 2700 graft FUE hair transplant to the frontal hairline and the scalp behind it.
Tightly curled hair behaves differently in a transplant. Each graft has to be angled to follow the direction of the curl, and extraction needs particular care because the follicle is curved beneath the skin. Curl also creates visual coverage, so density reads differently than it would with straight hair.
The grafts were placed to rebuild the hairline and improve coverage across the front, working with the patient's existing hair and the donor supply available.
The after images show this patient's individual result at the time of photography, viewed from the front and from above. Reduced density remains visible further back on the scalp.

A hair transplant does not end when you leave the clinic.
Patients go home with written aftercare instructions, and the first days matter most for graft security. The instructions cover washing, sleeping position, activity and what is normal to see while the area settles.
Follow-up then continues over the months that follow, because growth is slow and staged. Reviews are used to check healing in both the recipient and donor areas, look at how growth is progressing, and revisit the longer-term plan if the underlying hair loss is still changing.
Most of a hair transplant result develops well after the procedure day. Reviewing it properly is part of the work rather than an optional extra.
Consultations and reviews are held at our Malvern clinic.

500 GRAFTS | MALE FUE HAIR TRANSPLANT
This patient underwent a 500 graft FUE hair transplant to a defined area of reduced density at the crown.
Smaller cases like this one are about a specific area rather than the whole scalp. The crown grows in a whorl, with hair radiating outward from a central point, so grafts are placed to follow the direction the surrounding hair already travels in. That is what allows a smaller number of grafts to blend with existing hair rather than sit apart from it.
The after image shows this patient's individual result at the time of photography.

Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, is a cosmetic tattooing technique. Pigment is placed into the upper layers of the scalp to replicate the appearance of short hair follicles.
It can reduce the visual contrast between scalp and hair in thinning areas, or create the look of a closely shaved head. What it does not do is change the biology of the follicle. It does not slow hair loss and it does not produce new growth, so any hair loss underneath continues on its own course.
That distinction matters when people are weighing up options. SMP is aesthetic. Medical management addresses the process driving the loss. Surgery redistributes hair that already exists. They answer different questions, and some people use more than one of them over time.

Pattern hair loss develops gradually and follows a recognisable shape. Alopecia areata behaves differently. It is an autoimmune condition, where the immune system affects the hair follicle and hair is lost in defined patches, often over a short period. It can involve the scalp, beard, eyebrows or other hair-bearing areas, and the nails can show changes as well.
The distinction matters because the two are managed differently. Alopecia areata is not treated with surgery. Hair loss that is active and unpredictable does not give a stable basis for transplanted hair, so the appropriate step is medical assessment rather than a procedure.
September is Alopecia Areata Awareness Month, which is a reasonable prompt to say plainly that sudden or patchy hair loss should be assessed rather than self-diagnosed.

There is no fixed cut-off age, but age is one of the more important things assessed before surgery.
In younger patients, the concern is usually that the pattern of hair loss has not settled yet. Placing grafts into an area that is still changing can leave transplanted hair sitting in front of loss that carries on behind it. Donor hair used early is also no longer available later.
In older patients the questions are different. General health, the density and quality of the donor area, and how much loss has already happened all shape what is realistic.
Age on its own does not decide suitability. The pattern of loss, family history, donor supply and the likely progression over the next ten or twenty years matter more.

Did you know that at Atlantis Medical we schedule only one procedure per day?
A hair transplant is not a short appointment. Depending on the number of grafts, a procedure can run for most of the working day. Extraction, graft assessment, recipient site creation and placement each take time, and each stage affects how the result grows in.
Scheduling one patient a day means the clinical team is working on one plan from the morning through to the end of the procedure. It also means there is room to slow down when a stage needs it, rather than working to a pace set by the next person waiting.
It is a slower way to run a clinic. For this kind of work, we think it is the right one.

Donor hair is a finite resource. A hair transplant does not create new hair. It moves follicles from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp into areas that are thinning. That donor supply is limited, and it does not replenish. Every graft taken is one that cannot be used later. This is why long-term planning matters more than the graft number.
If hair loss is likely to progress, using most of the donor area in one early procedure can leave very little available for the areas that thin afterwards.
Part of the assessment is estimating how much donor hair is there, and deciding how much of it should be used now and how much should be kept in reserve.

This patient had recession through the frontal hairline, with thinning continuing behind it across the front of the scalp.
A 2000 graft procedure was performed to the frontal area. The grafts were distributed to rebuild the hairline and support the area immediately behind it, working with the hair the patient still had and with the donor supply available.
The hairline was positioned to suit his existing hair pattern and facial proportions, rather than sitting lower or denser than his own hair would support over time.
In the after image the hair is combed back off the face, and shows this patient's individual result at the time of photography.
