This is what I love about building a creative portrait shoot. Inspiration gives you somewhere to begin, but it shouldn’t dictate where you end up.
With Haruka in front of the camera, we played with classical ballet shapes, awkward angles, the bentwood chair, negative space and eventually a glowing orb, constantly asking, what else can we do with this?
Some of my favourite images came after we’d already captured the shots we originally had in mind.
That’s usually where the fun starts.

Before the lights.
Before the applause.
Before the music begins.
There is a quiet moment backstage when everything is still, the final touch is made, and the artist takes one last breath before stepping into the light.
I was lucky enough to share those moments with Thanh Duy Idol thanh duy , looking after his hair and makeup for his recent Melbourne show.
To watch the transformation backstage, then see him come alive under the lights, was something I’ll genuinely treasure forever.
